WES PTO Minutes from June 5, 2018

June 18, 2018 by WES PTO

  • 6th Grade Grad Party: Always been cupcakes, but maybe fruit platters? On the order of 300 cupcakes (as around 70 graduates). Cupcakes are easy to do. No food restrictions (the fifth grade parents put this on). Worry about allergies (some have strawberry allergies).

  • Positions to Fill: Co-president, Assistant for Camp Fair, Secretary is available if anyone wants, Snacks, PR person.

  • Family Social: Tonight, lemonade + popsicles.

  • Clothing Sale Recap: Went really well. Another record breaking sale. Steady traffic. Instead of sending bags to good will kept as inventory for Fall sale. Lot of non-WES families, lot of foster families, grandparents buying for kids, more and more every year. Lot of people with giant bags who are really happy and grateful to hear about the sale. The foster family network knows about the sale. Facebook helps. Number one priority is WES. If we can resell in the next sale should try to.

  • Treasurer Transition and report: Begin the transition to Jamie. Need a letter from the board for going to the bank. Should save a copy for the future. Have to go to the bank together.

  • Retiring Teacher Books: Coming up, 9 people.

  • WAW Planning Meeting, Thursday, June 7th, Cafeteria:

  • Bike to School Day: Unsuccessful phone tag on helmet fitting. Wednesday June 20th. Posters will go up soon. Three locations: Cole field for beginners (training wheels), the Spoke, Sand Springs Pool. Have a person at each. Meet at 7:50, depart at 8am. Police will be at key crossings. Steve will get some students of his to help.

  • Field Day: coming up Monday. Plans are looking good. Need some more volunteers: 915 – 1115 morning, actual day is 945 – 11am. Have 15 slots, can use more. Have 8/15 for morning and 9/15 for afternoon (1215 – 215).

  • Walk for WES: Need more people for this. Monday the 11th. Can be a pledge or a lump sum. Half an hour walking. Probably should just say donations and not pledge. June 11th Paid $200 last year for half an hour (previous years was a donation, then got paid). Call up a radio station for next year, great publicity, get a kick for the kids on air….

  • Budget: Art to Remember: can buy online or fill out form and send in check. We collected checks, $3000, online sales went straight to them. When all done they reconciled. Made $2200.
  • Recycled reads: Doubles and triples of usable books, more shabby than want to offer, do we know where we should donate these books that are extras? Other elementary schools? Book houses? One outside Berkshire museum? Landfill. Pre-schools. Library / doctor’s office.

  • Drop-off situation: Did a traffic study. At pickup no signage anywhere. Recommendation to replace faded signs. Need better lines and arrows, will coordinate with town over the summer. In watching the morning see the youth center fire lane is the spit and go. Looks like Albany airport, get out of car, unload, beautiful dance. Lot of frustration that we’ve been saying it is an active drop off lane and drivers shouldn’t be getting out of the car, but the vast majority of our kids are in seats and often door locks, so parents are getting out. Easy to nearly hit a parent…. In thinking about this there is a need for a controlled airport drop-off. Also older kids and want to spit out and go. Maybe youth center is airport drop, getting in and out, but not parked, unloading. Clearly painted lines. Circle, drive around. Let’s find a way to recognize the culture and make it safe. Have staff out there…. Mixed feeling about police. Some officers get out, some don’t. Perception if there is an officer watching bad behavior that reinforces things. Have police in morning as that’s our most vulnerable time and this way people are close; having police on premise is very unsettling to some people. Should re-brand and talk about safety not convenience.

  • Is this a good time for meetings? We’ve tried making accommodations and harder for those who currently come and all the people who say they will come don’t. Also better to have faster shorter meetings.
